Mammoth Hunters or the Mammoth Exhibition
Fri, 03 Nov 2006 16:52
On 11th October the armed convoy brought the most precious Czech statuette The Venus of Vestonice to the National Museum. The chesty national treasure will be a part of the Mammoth Hunters Exhibition presenting the life, religion and diet of our ancestors. The Exhibition was prepared by real experts. One of the operators, expert in palaeontology of large mammals, even tasted one mammoth before the commencement. The mammoth had been waiting in a Siberian fridge for Mrs. FiĹĄĂĄrkovĂĄ (RNDr.) longer than 30.000 years. The feat was arranged by archaeologists from Brno at a birthday party. But the meat allegedly tasted like candle and its consistency resembled felt slippers. Fresh mammoth must have been a real delicacy. It tasted most likely the same as beef or elephant meat. There is one restored mammoth right at the venue, but don´t taste it!!! It is a rare piece belonging to the school of experimental archaeology, whose spirit soars through the whole Exhibition. Attendants at this school try to feel into the history to such extent that they verify theoretical findings in practice. The Exhibition offers instructional films showing the primeval art of making tools and hide tanning or you can even try do that yourself. Painting on cave walls and clay modelling are intended primarily for children, but why would a man deny science. The Exhibition is divided into three sections dedicated to individual aspects of life in the primeval age. The section showing primeval religion can assure you that the belief in eternal life was well respected even 30.000 years ago. The eternal paradise was probably flooded with mammoth rump caught by mademoiselles with unbelievable grandiose and served rights into hunters throats. Yet it might have been the other way round, there was matriarchy and the Venus of VÄstonice represents the queen and mighty ruler of men and animals. He must have been admired as a goddess and we need to mentioned she was well built. Besides her you can also see some other valuables from Czech archaeologic collections: for example, you can compare Venus with her competitor from PĹedmostĂ. You will be impressed with demonstrations of primeval trades, replicas of tools and whole dwellings, models of people and animals, the accompanying show will give you the opportunity to dance to primeval music. Admission: adult - 110, children, students and pensioners â 60, family admission â 130. National MuseumAddress: 68 Wenceslas Square. 68, Prague 1 - 115 79 |
