Corpses in Lucerna!

Thu, 27 Dec 2007 11:14
Prague

From the 5th of May until the 28th of October there is a very controversial exhibition taking place at Prague´s Lucerna (Stepanska 61, Prague 1). BODIES... THE EXHIBITION, prepared by Roy Glover, an American biologist, is an international exhibition already seen by more then 16 million visitors around Europe and Asia. The exhibition presents real human bodies, treated and stabilized by a special preserving method, which basically means embalming. The bodies, both healthy and ill, are being transformed into preparatives showing the composition of human body. They are placed in various positions.

ENLIGHTENMENT OR DISGRACE?

The exhibition has many supporters and admirers but also many critics. Those point out the controversial ethic aspect of the exhibition. They believe that exposing human corpses in this way shows disrespect to human life and they warn that all the bodies come from China which brings out a fear that the people might be political prisoners of whom the communist regime got rid off. This suspicion has of course been denied by the operators of the exhibition.

The office of Prague 1 obtained an official complaint on the exhibition so it had to investigate whether the exhibition is not breaking the law €“ namely the act about burials. The author of the complaint referred to the regulation according to which a corpse must be deposited in a coffin. Nevertheless the police decided that the exhibition is no€™t breaking any law.

A known Czech catholic priest Tomas Halik also protested against the exhibition. He was particularly displeased by the presence of medicine students at what he called a €œbarbaric action. He found this inappropriate because he felt that the presence of the students is a trick to turn this “insult to human traditions of our culture into an educational event.

Also the Czech Anatomical Corporation denounced the exhibition. It considers outrageous, that the bodies are arranged in such a way to evoke impression of activities of living people and the intention to cause a sensation. Medicine doctors claim that it is a part of European way of thinking to show deference to deceased and to manipulate human remains properly.

And what do the operators say? Our body is an inseparable part of ourselves but these days people seem to have lost the connection with it. And the exhibition aims to help us restore this connection, so necessary for a high-quality life.
