WENCESLAS SQUARE

Sun, 18 Mar 2007 10:38

The Wenceslas Square is not only shopping place, but historical sight as well.It lies within the district New Town€, which is a little confusing. It was founded in 1348 by Charles the 4th, who called it this way because at this time, only Old Town€ existed. Wenceslas Square is named after St. Wenceslas, the saint patron of Czechia. The square has an image of a boulevard, or long street.

In the upper part the oldest (founded in 1818) and largest Czech muzeum, „Národní muzeum (National museum), is housed in a monumental neoclassical building. In front of the National Museum a statue of Saint Wenceslas is located, dominating all the street. The statue base includes the inscription: "Svatý Václave, vévodo české země, kníže náš, nedej zahynouti nám ni budoucím" ("Saint Wenceslas, duke of the Czech land, prince of ours, do not let perish us nor our descendants").

How to get there? The Line A of the metro runs underneath Wenceslas Square, and the Metro's two busiest stations, Muzeum and Mustek, have entrances on the street. The trams´ nearest stop is Jindriska, contingently Vodickova by the other side of the Wenceslas Square.
