One World - Film Festival

Wed, 28 Feb 2007 17:40

From February 28 to March 8, Jeden svet€œ (One World Festival) is running in Prague.15 regional cities in the Czech Republic are organising it later. The festival will be endorsed by Vaclav Havel, the Minister of Culture Vaclav Jehlicka, the Mayor of Prague Pavel Bem and local authorities in cities and regions; without their support it would be hard pressed to achieve what it does. This festival belongs among members of the Association of Human Rights Festivals spread throughout the world.

The themes of films are similar, political or social, but the plot is situated in different countries with wide-ranging life´s conditions. In the same time it shows that the world is globally interconnected and everyone is touched by the problems films speak about. The aim of the festival is to draw attention of the large public. Thought, the potential of documentary films is principally in the education of young people and in breaking prejudices about „strange“ corners of the world.

From my experience, many kinds of people meet there and nobody may feel in minority. After each film screening there follow a debate. The posibility to explain someone´s opinion is sometimes ruined by little time, but the conception of One World as a discussion forum is better and better developped. This year in Prague there will take place over 50 discussions of various foreign- political, human-rights, civil society and ecological themes. Some of them are lead in English.

Many films are in English too, with Czech subtitiles. There are documentary films that have already recieved prestigious awards in last years, and also investigative and activist films. They compete in 3 kinds of competitions: Main Competition, the Short Forms Competition and the special Right to Know competition.

The festival centre will be at Lucerna Cinema (Vodičkova 36, Praha 1). The other festival cinemas include Světozor (Vodičkova 36, Praha 1), Evald (Národní 28, Praha 1), Ponrepo (Bartolomějská 11, Praha 1), Perštýn (Na Perštýně 6, Praha 1), and the City Library (Městská knihovna, Mariánské nám. 1, Praha 1).Tickets can be purchased at all festival cinemas for CZK 70. The English version of the festival programme catalogue can be purchased for CZK 100.

Here are some tips for films that shouldn´t be missed:

1/3 in the City library, 17:30 - Three Comrades (originally german Drie Kameraden)
2/3 Světozor, 22:00 Wrong Time, Wrong Place
