National Gallery in Prague

Wed, 21 Feb 2007 18:15

The National Gallery is an umbrella organization for a number of art galleries all over Prague. Its history has been written since 1796 and today it collects a great treasure of all kinds of arts including the works of most recognized czech artists.

The aim of this article is to offer a view of particular galleries, which means: Šternberský palác (Sternberg palace), Klášter sv. Jiří (St. George´s konvent), Klášter sv. Anežky České (Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia), Dům U Černé Matky Boží ( House at the Black Madonna), Veletržní palác,Zámek Zbraslav (Zbraslav Chateau) and Palác Kinských.

The oldest czech art is hidden in the Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia, an authentic building founded in 1231 by St Agnes as a convent of the Poor Clares. The exposition of medieval art is divided into two parts, because of the difference between the situation around 1400, when Bohemia and Prague were important European art centers, and 15th century, when czech art was more inclined to receive an external influence.Generally, there are panel paintings and sculptures representing mostly portraits of saints.

St George's Convent is more ancient, but it collects more recent works. It was built in 937 and then rebuilt in a Baroque style after fires. That´s why the exposition reflects later tendencies in the arts -Mannerism and Baroque in Bohemia. At the period artists were supported by the emperor Rudolf II., that’s why works of hight quality were born. The Mannerism is a smaller part of works. The renowned collection of portraits of Jan Kupecký, Petr Brandl , Hans von Aachen and others names prepare a unique experience for everyone. What´s more, a temporary exhibition of italian Rennaissance is running until 15/04/2007.

By now the expositions have shown art in czech countries, on the other hand the exposition in Sternberg Palace represents European Art from the Classical Era to the Close of the Baroque.German and austrian art from 15th to 18th century is located on the first floor.Remember that Germany and Austria are neighbour states of Czech Republic. On the second floor, there are antic Italian and Dutch art which influenced tremendously european, including Czech art. Finally, Italian, Spanish, French and Dutch art from 16th to 18th century is showed on the third floor.Well known Rembrandt,Goya, Rubens and Giordano are the main topic.

Continuing chronologically in the czech art history, KinskĂ˝ Palace offers landscape paintings from the Baroque era and 19th century.Landscape can be real or imaginary, in different manners it connects famous Fila, ZrzavĂ˝, Ĺ krĂŠta or NejedlĂ˝ as an important topic of a great number of czech artists.

House at the Black Madonna, unique cubist building, designed by Josef Gočár, was built in 1911-1912 at the place of ruined old house in a cubist manner.Nowadays it represents a museum of the czech cubism. The exposition is focused on the period 1910- 19, and there are pictures as well as plastic art and other forms of modern art.The most attractive works are those from Emil Fila, Jan Zrzavý, Otto Gutfreund and others.Apart from art, you can find inside a comfortable coffee as well.

VeletrĹžnĂ Palace is a remarkable Functionalist building. The permanent exhibition of 19th, 20th and 21st century art acquaints visitors with the development of Czech and foreign fine art.The image of the period is complemented with examples of architecture, furniture, the applied arts, fashion, design and stage design. You will also find photographs, drawings and prints concentrated in graphic cabinets.

Zbraslav Chateau is delocated in the very South of Prague and presents a collection of Asian Art: art of Japan, of China, of Southeast Asia, of Tibet, of India and of Islam. The exposition gives you a general idea about these countries, sometimes it is concerned on Prehistory, others countries are represented by more recent styles – it depends on the period the country is famous of.
