Botanical gardens in Prague

Wed, 24 Jan 2007 20:42

In Prague, there are not only historic sights. If you were in Prague longer time, you might want to try something else. Why wouldn´t you visit botanical garden?
The main (municipal) botanical garden is situated in the North of the city, in the town district Troja, next to the ZOO,on the address Nadvorni 134.You can get there by the bus 112 from the Nadrazi Holesovice you get out at the station Botanicka zahrada Troja€œ. Nadrazi Holesovice is on the line C of the subway and on the route of tramways 15,12 and 5.

The garden is divided into more parts: the outdoor exhibition, including the Japanese garden and the St. Clara Vineyard, and a greenhouse. The tropical greenhouse Fata Morgana stands apart; although it was built recently (in 2004 opened for the public), it is very famous and much visited.Near the entrance to the outdoor part, an instructive path of 3 km beggins. You need 2 hours to reach the end: at the end the bus 112 stops (it is the station Kovårna). The path relies a heather meadow called Pustå Vinice and the valley of the brook Haltýť, constituting together a natural reservation Havrånky.

Pustá Vinice means „neglected vineyard“.This designation comes from the old times: during the reign of the emperor Rudolf II (end of the 16th century),Prague was referred to as the „wine city“.As a result of the Thirty Years War, vineyards were neglected. Now, the Prague wine–growing area doesn´t exceed 26 hectares:St. Clara, with it´s 3.5 hectares is the largest one and it is a reminder of the past glory of the Prague viniculture.

Owing to the garden´s location on a hill, there is a beautiful view to the South. It is possible to overlook a big part of the town and you can even know what you see, because in the garden, near the St. Clara Chapel there is a panel with the described photo of the panorama that you see.A similar one is situated up the hill, on the route of the instructive path.

The opening hours of all the parts of the garden are the same.It is open daily except Monday, from 9 A.M. till afternoon depending on the season: now until 16, in March until 17, then until 18 o´clock.A visit of the Fata Morgana and outdoor exposition costs 90 CZK for an adult, outdoor visit only 40 CZK.Apart from this, the entrance to the outdoor exhibition is free during the winter. On the other side, there is not many things to see, because in the vineyard and in the Japanese garden, paths are being fixed at the moment, and principally, no flowers are blooming. It is better to wait for March, when crocus and others bulbous plants are going to be already in blossom.

Now it is the right time to visit the tropical greenhouse Fata Morgana. There is a permanent exposition of botanical guilds from rain forest, as well as from the semi-desert and the mountains. These three zones differ one from another in their climatic conditions, but they have a high temperature in common. In the middle of the greenhouse, there is an interesting aquarium which intensifies the diversity of the greenhouse.A terrace serves for occasional exhibitions. From now to the 4th of Fabruary, you can see an exhibition of palms (70 species) and cycass (20 species) .At the weekends, the show is accompanied by a professional comment, which begins every whole hour and is free.It is even possible to buy a seed – then you can grow a palm yourself.

Sometimes, it is also possible to visit a temporary exhibition who mustn´t be, of necessity, associated with plants. You´d find it in another part of the garden: in a little house at the beginning of the outside exhibition. For exemple, now,an exposition of handbags, satchels and baskets made from natural materials, arranged by the museum Nåprstkovo, is running. It is available also till the 4th of Fabruary.

If you want to search for more informations, look at the web page of the botanical garden:www.botanicka.cz . It is also possible to order a guide speaking english or another language for 500 CZK (by e-mail,look at the web) or you can buy an electronic one at the place just for 30 CZK.
