OLD TOWN SQUARE

This square is one of the most ancient parts of the city, located between Wenceslas Square and the Charles bridge.Various architectural styles can be found there, including the gothic Tyn Cathedral, baroque St.Nicholas Church or a sculpture of Jan Hus, a religious reformer, in the middle.Above all of it, the most famous attraction on The Old Town Square is The Astronomical Clock (Orloj). 
This medieval clock dates from the beginning of the 15th century. On the hour between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m, a procession of the Twelve Apostles appears the window in the upper part. In the lower part are 12 medallions with the signs of the zodiac, representing the months.Apart from this,a competent observer will be able to reproach a great number of other astronomical data.The Orloj is mounted on the southern wall of Old Town City Hall (StaromÄstskĂĄ radnice). 
The Old Town City Hall was established in 1338 as the seat of the Old Town authorities. The oldest gothic part of the complex includes a chapel and a tower, which you can step up. The eastern wing of the Old Town Hall was destroyed on May 8, 1945, and has not been rebuilt yet. |
