On the 10 m wide and 520 m long bridge, Ukrainian caricaturists, Czech puppeteers and American guitar players vie for the atention of passers-by.

The elegant Art-Nouveau bridge was built between 1906 and 1908 to plans by engineer Josef Soukup and architect Jan Koula. It links the Old Town with waterfront of Letna Park.

Had King Vladislav not moved his court to the Castle, this breathtaking example of Czech secessionist architecture might never have been built. On the largely abandoned site of the former Royal Court, the Municipal House was built (1906 - 1911), wits its semi-circular mosaic Homage to Prague by Karel Spillar above the main entrance.

Sounds like a case for the record book: the Gothic tower was begun in 1475 and completed 400 years later! In 1484 work was interrupted on the prestige object because King Vladislav shifted his seat of government from the Old Town to the Castle.

Tourists from all over the world stroll on the spot where, in 1648, an army of students and Jews held out against the Swedes, marking a turning point in the Thirty Years’ War. During the battle, the decoration on the bridge side of the tower was destroyed.
